Garage materialism is growing

Ever since the first suburbs were built, the garage
became a measure of the financial prosperity of a
family. At first there was one, then two, but now four
garages are becoming the newest form of decadence in
home building. A real estate agent would say that
people have a log of gear and items these days so there
is a huge demand for a place to store them. These
garages, in some instances, may be larger than many apartments,
housing more cars than ever. The third and maybe
fourth family car is a necessity for families where kids
stay home longer and the restrictions on street parking
are one of the factors that point towards building larger
garages.

Moreover, every man has his love for the toys
such as boats, jet skis, motorcycles, bikes, power tools
and workbenches and these toys need storage. A
look into a three or four car garage may reveal tools,
bikes, sporting gear, a workshop and a 25-foot boat.
This visual degradation of the suburban landscape is an
aspect of materialism that won t stop turning any time
soon.

Not everybody likes this trend. Some home builders
spend the extra time and money on architectural plans
that can split these huge expanses of square footage into
opposite sides of the house. A problem that appears
here is the problem of the house s design after this
transformation. The most aesthetical are the back-
loading garages but they require the use of the backyard
space for turning radiuses. Side-loading garages need
wider home sites but can make the front of the house
look enormous. With the current rising costs for
land, in many areas this is not feasible in the long run.
This is a sign of a mega-materialism, that is: if one is
good five is better so more and more people understand
only one thing: that a garage is not good unless it is as
big as a basketball court.

When will it stop?
Are we going to have the house attached to a garage ten
times bigger than the house? Maybe it would be better
for everyone to think twice before making such a commitment
when buying a house attached to the garage. Maybe it
would be better if people would care about the simpler
and more basic things in life than owning a four car
garage.

Garage doors

There are four basic types of garage doors and three types of
materials commonly used to construct these doors.

If a traditional look is desired for the garage, then the side
hung garage door is the usual solution. Side-hung doors can
be fitted directly on a wood frame or on bricks.

Another type of garage door is the sectional garage door.
These doors are perfect where the space in front of the garage
is limited because they open vertically. They are perfect
for a new garage that is intended to have an aesthetic appeal.

Similar to sectional garage doors are the roller doors. The
door rolls up inside a drum above the opening of the garage
door. Also there is no need to allow any room inside or out to
operate the door so it would be well suited for limited space
in front of the garage.

The last type of door is the most common one, up and over
garage door. This is the most popular type. They can be
manufactured from timber, steel and GPR materials. They
can also be manual or automatic and they are relatively easy
to install.

A garage addition Does our older child need

By admin on January 18th, 2008

A garage addition

Does our older child need a little more liberty? Your work from home or
maybe you just feel that you need another room for a special project
that you want to start? Then the solution is to construct a
new addition to your garage.

By making an addition to your garage you can add to the living space in
your house, no matter what type of garage you own: detached or
attached to the house. The space above the garage can be converted into
a private living space for your older child, guests or a live-in parent.
You can convert your garage into your home office. You could very well
find here the peace and quiet needed for your work. Also, the new addition
can be converted into a music studio if you put some simple sound
proofing measures into place.

In order to start planning for your garage addition, first prepare
a budget and then hire a professional because this is a complex
project. Also, you may need to hire an architect to help you with
the construction plans.

Wholesale Kitchen Sinks If you are looking for

By admin on January 13th, 2008

Wholesale Kitchen Sinks

If you are looking for a wholesale kitchen sink, you just might have a little trouble finding one. Sinks that are sold wholesale are not that hard to find if you know where to look. The first thing that you have to consider is you are not going to be able to get a sink at wholesale prices if you are not buying your sinks in bulk. If you are needing more than one sink, you should be able to get a great deal on them. However, if you are looking for only one, you might end up having to pay retail for your sink.

One place that you can look for your wholesale kitchen sink is your local home improvement center. If they sell wholesale kitchen sinks, then you are sure to find the perfect one that you have been looking for. If you are having a problem finding the sinks while you are in the home improvement store, be sure that you ask someone that can help you. You just might find that you happened to over look the sinks, or even the specific sinks that you are looking for. You will find that there are many styles and designs to choose from in a sink.

Another place that you could look for a wholesale kitchen sink would be a plumbing store. Because a plumbing store specializes in all things for your water needs, they just might have the sink that you are wanting. If they do not happen to carry the sink in the store, you should ask them about ordering it for you. Some plumbing stores are able to do this and some are not. Asking about it just might get you the sink that you are wanting. You will love your new sink and enjoy using it.

While you are looking around for a wholesale kitchen sink, you just might find a wholesale dealer that can help you with your sink. Be sure that you ask how many sinks you need to purchase to take advantage of the wholesale prices and make sure that you are not buying more sinks than you will need just to get a decent price on one sink. You would be better off paying retail for your new kitchen sink.

As you can see, there are many places that you can look for the wholesale kitchen sink that you need. Knowing where to look is half the battle, once you locate the sinks and know just where they are sold, you will have then have to choose the perfect one for your needs.

Surplus Kitchen Cabinets Help You Save Money as

Surplus Kitchen Cabinets Help You Save Money as well as Space

Surplus kitchen cabinets are those left over when large kitchen cabinet and furniture manufacturers do not sell all of their products. Typically, the larger kitchen furniture manufacturers will sell the vast majority of their kitchen furnishing products to the larger kitchen furniture and home improvement stores. This is simply the biggest and best venues that the manufacturers have.

Places like http://overstock.com take advantage of overstocked merchandise, by collecting all of these items in one place and offering them to the general public. This way, the manufacturers can get rid of their excess product, make back the cost of materials and labor at the very least, and customers benefit from the savings.

Now it may take longer for the exact style that you want to refurnish your kitchen in to show up in the overstock types of websites, but if you can stand to wait, it is so worth it. I found this out myself several years ago and have carefully applied it to other aspects of decorating and home improvement over the years.

About a decade ago I was redecorating my kitchen and had my heart set on a particular style and model of kitchen cabinets that included very beautiful granite countertop pieces as well as granite backsplash pieces. I was so excited when I discovered this particular product that I ran out to the home improvement store to see it for myself as we’ll as price the stuff.

Of course as soon as I saw it I fell I love and came very close to purchasing the entire collection of kitchen cabinets and finishing materials required to do my whole kitchen. I just didn’t want to wait. I mean who knew how long it would be before these items were to be found at any type of discount? I was finally able to convince myself to wait for a set amount of time.

I waited six months and though I was never going to see a discount on the surplus kitchen cabinets that I wanted. I began to think it was just never going to happen. I had nearly given up hope when I finally saw that exact line of kitchen cabinets on sale as surplus product from a well known kitchen cabinet manufacturing company.

I flew down to the outlet store and went home with my long desired surplus kitchen cabinets, along with the hearty bargain in terms of money saved. All in all, I walked away saving more than $300 just for having a little bit of patience. I recommend the same approach to anyone looking to find the best bargain on surplus kitchen cabinets.

I walked away with a great deal that never would have happened had I not exercised a bit of patience as well s research. Take the tie to browse through the newest additions at overstock companies regularly so that you don’t miss your dream sale once it finally takes place.

Why Would You Want a Country Kitchen Table?

There are many reasons why you might want a country kitchen table. Anyone may have their own particular reasons, why they would want any specific dining table. Wanting a country one is just the same. Perhaps the design matches the design you have in a room that needs a dining table. Maybe you just like the look of the country style dining table. There are several reasons why a country style table might fit into the category of something you want.

1. The country style You may want a country kitchen table just because of the style. As we know, the country style is all about country. The country style tables are a little older looking or what one may even call kind of an antique. Which could be something that your eye is drawn to. Meaning, a country style dining table would be something that would suit your style, and the decor of the room you want it in. Now just to find the perfect table . . .

Nothing wrong with that, you could always have the square top dining table designed with the oval shaped top to match your particular style.

Kitchen Hoods Comparison Studies

In this section a variety of techniques and research
findings are presented that demonstrate the
performance and value that Halton s products offer the
end-user. There is a discussion on the ineffectiveness
of some hood designs offered by Halton s competitors
followed by a discussion of how capture efficiency
impacts the energy use, and energy bills, of the end-
user.
KVI Case Study
Halton is using state-of-the-art techniques to validate
hood performance. These include modeling of
systems, using CFD, Schlieren imaging systems, and
smoke visualization. All the test results presented here
have been validated by third-party research.
Halton s standard canopy hood (model KVI) utilizes
Capture Jet technology to enhance hood
performance, and consequently hood efficiency,
versus the competition.
In this case study, the KVI hood has been modelled
using CFD software. Two cases were modelled for this
analysis: one with the jets turned off in effect this
simulates a generic exhaust only canopy hood and a
second model with the jets turned on. As can be seen
from observing figures 13 and 4, at the same exhaust
flow rate, the hood is spilling when the jets are turned
off and capturing when they are turned on.
The same studies were conducted in the third party
laboratory. The Schlieren Thermal Imaging system was
used to visualise the plume and effect of Capture
Jet. As one can see the CFD results are in good
agreement with the Schlieren visualisation

Successful kitchen design plans begin with a careful

By admin on November 9th, 2007

Successful kitchen design plans
begin with a careful review of the real
needs and desires of the homeowners. It s
wise to begin the design process by first
determining how you plan to use the space.
Consider the type of meal preparation
you usually do, the number of people
helping in the kitchen, whether meals will
be eaten in the space and whether or not
the kitchen is going to be open and acces-
sible to other areas of the home. You may
want to incorporate a new function into
the kitchen by adding an informal eating
area or office-like work space. It is also
important to give thought to the type of
appliances you want in your kitchen.
It is most important to set a realistic
budget. I strongly recommend hiring pro-
fessionals to assist you with your renovation
project, whatever your budget. This is
definitely not an area to skimp on and you
want to avoid costly errors, so it is a good
idea to let a professional take all measure-
ments and do the installation. Regardless
of all the practical reasons to renovate this
space, when it is all finished what you
want is a kitchen that is visually attractive,
well lighted, and has inviting personal
touches.

OBSERVATIONS AND LESSONS LEARNED

The discussions of the first phase were useful to identify the
requirements that could improve the application and the user
interface. We noticed that the playback of the video in playback
mode is more entertaining when two people recorded a recipe
together rather than a single one. When a single user is
recording a recipe, it can happen that she forgets to mention a
step. When two people cook together, the spontaneous
conversation among the two of them, such as Can you please
pass me the cheese? or Can you turn down the fire? helps to
keep track of the process. It also creates a more fun experience
for the users that are recording as they often end up in jokes or
small talks about the recipe. The feeling of a natural social
setting makes the whole cooking session more interesting for
the user who plays the video back and the personalization of
content is much stronger. For this reason, after the first test, we
agreed on the protocol to cook with two people in all further
tests.
Given that cooks are already managing a set of tools, we
observed that the manipulation of an additional one, i.e., the
pen, soon became inconvenient, especially when it was
misplaced on the kitchen counter as it happens with cooking
tools. After this observation in the first tests, the pen was
hanged with a piece of string next to the display, so as to
support more casual use.
We also noticed that more than one camera would better
capture the whole event. A closer look at commercial TV
cooking shows revealed that they use up to seven distinct
camera positions. Indeed it is important to have a close view at
the location where the food is actually prepared (e.g. the fire
and the counter), as well as on the face and movements of the
person who is cooking, in order to keep the desired sense of
presence.
The cognitive walkthrough tests with users from outside of the
project team gave us some useful insight both on the usability
of the interface as well as on the whole experience. To this
respect it became clear the difficulty to evaluate experiences in
a hybrid context, in an environment which is supposed to
recreate an everyday life one, but is actually still far from the
intimacy and acquaintance people have in their own real
domestic environments. Even though some testers were
employees of the lab and know the environment of this specific
kitchen, the activities they normally perform there are different
from proper cooking: e.g. coffee preparation, food warm-up,
food storage. When both the employees and the external testers
were asked to use the application and to cook there, we noticed
that a certain stress was generated by the pure fact of cooking
in an unfamiliar kitchen, using the interface, talking aloud or
observing a video, and, in the cognitive walkthrough, being
observed by a researcher. Some users, in particular, were most
concerned about the result of their cooking, being aware that
the team would taste it afterwards. Thus, the feedback they
provided was mostly focused on this aspect rather than the
whole experience of using the application and how this could
affect their mundane activities.
In these tests we realized that for the assessment of the whole
experience and of its social meaning it would be necessary to
let users try the application in their own kitchens they feel
familiar with. Furthermore, the expected increase in motivation
due to social relationships needs to be validated in a more
intimate social setting. One of the testers explicitly asked to
have the video of his cooking session to show it to his
girlfriend.
Therefore we plan to connect different
kitchens/cooks that have a real familiar relationship.
