With apartment limitations, what colors should I go with for my kitchen.

I’ve just signed a new lease on my apartment for another year. It wasn’t my plan to live there that long, but now that I am I’m determined to make my apartment more my style so I don’t have to stare at white walls.

My first project is the kitchen and already I’m stuck. My cabinets are oak (I can’t stand oak), and my countertops are white/speckled and my appliances are white as well. I’m allowed to paint, but I can’t do anything to the cabinets, and with the oak I don’t want my kitchen to look country.

Can anyone recommend a good color scheme. I love retro styles and/or modern.Thanks.
