By on July 21st, 2010

me and my girlfreind have splitt up after 2 1/2 years living together, the house is in joint names and newly refurbished by myself, i put the deposit down on the house and have spent lots on the refurb. the idea was that we would both pay the mortgage id pay the bills and her the food. as it turns out it did not work like that and i quickly found myself paying everything( all coming from my account), now we have splitt we need to sort the house, she is wanting half of it even tho we had a verbal agreement that i would get my deposit back along with the money for materials on the refurb, if she is entitled to half becouse of the joint owning. she has taken all the furniture that she had bourght so im left with a nice but 3/4 empty house. Could i take my things ie the fire place, central heating, kitchen, bathroom, electrics.
i am flat broke and cant efford a solicitor, i have soley paid everything for the last year.
she is getting in dept on her own with out paying for a house,

The old particleboard subfloors have rotten and my landlady said it’s my fault.

By on July 20th, 2010

I live in an old singlewide, maybe 30 years old. I noticed a few soft spots when I moved in in 2008 but I was naive and didn’t think they were a big deal. Plus, at the time I had a handyman boyfriend who would have fixed things for the landlady for free (like he did the washing machine). He found the place for me and rented it (there has NEVER been a written lease by the way.he took care of the business side of things though). He did that but we never lived together, and we broke up a few months later. Anyway, within months the subfloors in the kids’ room and adjoining bath literally caved in. There was nothing under the carpet. The landlady had those floors fixed. Now the subfloor has caved in in the bathroom and kitchen and I’m nervous about the soft spots in the master bedroom. The only floor that is currently fine is the living room floor.but apparently that’s because it must have caved in before I ever moved in. It’s subfloor is plywood instead of particle board which implies that it was probably originally particle board and had the same problem as the other rooms years ago.

The landlady says that at least the problem in the bathroom is my fault and that I can either pay for the repairs or I have 30 days to move out (28 days now). From what I’ve read online, rotten subfloors are very common in mobile homes with particle board. In fact, it says that rotten bathroom subfloors are the most common problem. The handyman she hired (who relies on her for business and mentioned he can’t lose her income) said that there must have been a leak from the wax ring on the toilet that caused damage over the course of several months and eventually caused the hole a foot away (there are other parts about to give way too). One day it just caved in under my feet. I noticed water around the toilet but I thought it was coming from the shower literally inches away, it’s practically pushed up against the toilet. There was no noticeable leak from the toilet, so I believe I was reasonable to think it was from the shower. I didn’t even know what a wax ring was or what it’s supposed to look like and I don’t think it’s something that many people would realize on their own. I always wiped up water from the bathroom and kept a towel around the toilet just in case. Is there another possible cause for the problem. And even if that is what happened, is it really my fault since bathrooms are obviously going to get wet and I wiped up all the water I saw. I did try to be careful. And should a tenant really be responsible for paying for floors that are prone to rotting. I’m willing to pay for anything I’m definitely responsible for but I just can’t afford to pay for floors that were past their prime and rotting anyway, you know. Apparently they had begun to rot before I even moved in and I just missed the signs like many people would have. My dad says that everything looked nice on the surface but that there were problems brewing underneath. I think it’s weird because there are some spots (who knows when they’ll cave in too) that I don’t think have ever even been spilled on since I got here.I just don’t think I did anything to cause this. It’s just so common. From what I gathered, the bathroom will be more expensive to fix than the other rooms though. It’s weird because so far nobody has said that the other holes/soft spots were my fault.it looks like the floors were just rotting anyway and that I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. If there are any experts here I’d really like to hear opinions. I’m really scared, I’m the single mother of 2 kids including an autistic son. I have so much on my shoulders and I can’t believe this is happening. Thank you.
I live in NC.

Unfortunately I’m no longer with my handyman boyfriend. When I moved in, I figured he’d be able to fix any issues that came up so I just wasn’t worried. He fixed the washing machine once. It was really old and actually randomly shredded clothes. A few months ago, I realized it just couldn’t be fixed and bought a new one.

I’m really frustrated that two handymen have said that this subfloor damage is due to my negligence. I mentioned that the vinyl should be waterproof. I also mentioned that even if they knew enough to know a problem was brewing, the typical occupant wouldn’t. There was no obvious problem to me. But because of what they said, she’s holding me to damages.

If anyone else with experience here chimes in, I would appreciate it. I need some more opinions before I really know if I have a legal standing. The handymen pointed out that she’s savvy and has the best lawyer in the area. I’m so scared.
The men did notice that the dirt under the trailer was wet because they crawled under there and got muddy. The nearby HVAC seems to be leaking water. It’s fairly close to the bathroom but not to the other rooms. I really hope that you guys are right and that I can prove this is not my fault. I’m so scared. I have started trying to find another place but it’s really hard to find anything that meets our needs. The landlady already told me that she wouldn’t give me a good reference so I feel like I’m totally screwed. Anyone who calls her will hear about this.

Survey: What is your most frivolous kitchen tool.

You know a silly little cookie mold or food chopper or something of that nature. Do you use it. I have a cookie press and couple of those fancy cheese graters like they have at the Olive Garden but I prefer my microplane what about you.

I think my guy neighbor is spying on me.

I can’t figure this out.

I live in a place where there is a basement suite. I live upstairs.

The downstairs guy is most times listening at my suit door. I can hear him.

I have online skye conversations in the kitchen with guys and he listens to it.
He listens when I am cleaning in the kitchen.
he listens when I am in my bedroom on the phone
Or when I have a friend the living room.

Sometimes, he use to vacume when I had a guy in the living rom.
Or he would stop his feet when I would be talking on the phone in my bedroom.

Then I saw him in the driveway and he told me was going away for the long weekend.
I told him i was going to have a friend come over.
He looked at me all stunned.
I looked back in confusion and just got in my car.

He looked mad at me as I was backing out of the driveway.

Whenever I do laundry in the basement the girlfriend is creepy watching me or knocking on my door for this and that. I ignore it now as she scrares me.

Thoughts.
Why does he listen.

HELP. Got Ant Issues.

By on July 17th, 2010

So three days ago we discovered ants in the pantry on the floor. I cleaned them up then sprayed raid ant spray. That was successful, no more ants in the pantry. Now they are on the wall next to the stove Ants Everywhere and lots of them. I pulled the stove out and you can see they are traveling somewhere from that area. We had bought some of those ant bail traps (12 in a box) The instructions are kind of vague. I does say NOT to use any spray with them because it could contaminate the traps.
The Kitchen has been off limits for the past few days, I just can’t deal with these ants and think about making any meals until they are gone. Just trying to control the problem without the cost of an exterminator if possible.
So weird how they have gone up to the spice cabinet and attacking the olive oil spray can and the bottle of olive oil. Apparently, ants love olive oil. lol
Any insight on this problem.

Decorating HELP HELP HELP. Kitchen question.

By on July 15th, 2010

I am in the middle of remodeling my kitchen. we are painting the cabinets black, with stainless steel appliances. We have had Quartz counter tops installed in the color Diana Pearl. Here is a link to view the color
http://www.silestoneusa.com/colors/colors.cfm.ColorID=24

My question is I really am stuck on my back splash, Any travertine I find has a gold color in it and that just doesn’t go in my opinion with all the silver we have. I would really like to incorporate a little color with the back splash (or a lot).the only color I really like is blue.sometimes green. Please if anyone has this counter top with a back splash and would send pics that would be great or has any suggestions. Thanks.
in person there is actually no gold.sorry if the pic shows that, but it is the best pic i could find :-)

Side-effect of cooking in kitchen.

By on July 13th, 2010

I am looking for a good solution for this problem: Often at the time of cooking in the kitchen, smoke fills air inside the house to such an extent that we have difficulty in breathing. We do use exhaust fan in the kitchen but that is not sufficient to expel all the smoke. This happens particularly when something is fried with mustard oil. My first question is, how to reduce amount of smoke coming out of the kitchen.
Second, in the room adjacent to the kitchen, furniture is getting oily.we feel that whenever we touch the surfaces of the chairs or tables. How do we get rid of this problem.

What are the essentials tools and equipment for a kitchen.

By on July 12th, 2010

I’m finally moving out of the nest and I really don’t know what should go in a kitchen besides frig, microwave, silverware, plates, bowls, cups, pots, pans, etc. I’m asking about the tools you use to cook. And if there are any new unique kitchen items that are a must have. THANKS. :]
