can anyone advise about my bath.

By on November 30th, 2009

What can you do for a scratch in a plastic bath.

not so long ago i had my bathroom and kitchen re done, its an improvement from what it was, but all together ‘ shoddy , shabby ‘ workmanship, i made a complaint but nothing came of it as i live in a housing association flat , and they think it was up to standard.

inspite , the redesign is better that it was but still crappy, shabby work, the workmen are calling on monday because recently i complained about my moving toilet and a single scratch in the bath where the mental handles are.

the scratch is less than an inch long, and is located at the edge of one of the metal handles, but its still bothering me because the bath is supposed to be new.

my fear is they will fix the toilet , but now the works completed , they wont do anything about the scratch in the bath. and will try to dismiss it as nothing or irrelevant.

if that occurs , does anyone know what can be done about a scratch in a plastic bath less than an inch long .

Rennovating a 40 year old house - Where to start.

By on November 29th, 2009

I just bought a 40 year old house in melbourne. I am looking to modernize it as best as i can. The house itself is approximatley 12 Square meters or so.

Here is a list of a few things i am looking to get done:

Render the front of the house
Repaint the rooftiles
Repaint the interior
Install built in cuboards for the 3 bedrooms
Replace doors and windows
Remodel the kitchen
Remodel the bathroom
Remodel the laundry
Remove existing tiles/Replace with new ones
Install Carpets over the wood floor

OK. now where the hard part is.

WHERE DO I START.

At the moment it feels like there is a mountain’s worth of work and i feel like i dont know what come first. Any ideas as to what i should get done first. Please make a little priority list for me labelled 1-10 as to what i should do first.

then i lost my tv remote and i have a dog that love to grab things and put it under the bed so i put my hand under the bed and felt around . i could not find it so i placed my right hand under the bed to search the other side and then i feel something touch my other hand as if someone placed it there
i pull out my hand and voula the remote was there only one problem my left hand was completely still. im so scared that i put my clothes on thinking a ghost was following me lolz (i usually sleep naked more comfortable)

Should I get a fixed rate mortgage if I plan to remodel right away.

By on November 26th, 2009

Hi all,

I am planning to buy a house with 5-10% down, but I want to remodel the kitchen and bedroom within the next two years. I expect this will add to the value of the house, making my loan-to-value ratio closer to 80/20. Do you think I should get a mortgage with an ARM, if it has a better rate, and then refinance once the remodeling is complete. Any other suggestions for the mortgage.

Good estimate for house remodeling.

We’re looking to do some renovations for selling our 3,200 sq-ft house. We are looking for an economical-to-moderate general budget estimate. How much do you think these things will cost. (We are seniors and won’t be able to do any of the work ourselves.)

1. Replace all vinyl floor (with tiles) and carpet (with new carpet)

2. Kitchen: New cabinets, sink, dish washer

3. 2 bathrooms, total remodel (new toilet, sink, cabinets, tub, shower doors)

4. Repaint whole house (including inside, outside, and garage)

5. Fix a few window screens

6. Replace chimney wood siding

7. Repair garage door sensors
(We’re looking for basic, lower-end finishes, mostly for repairs, not cosmetic.)

Home I’m buying is being repaired by seller, but no permits have been pulled, I’ve learned. Now what.

By on November 24th, 2009

I’m in the process of buying a house as a 1st time buyer. I have a closing date and I can’t run away at this point. I’ve only recently learned about permits and building code inspections.

The house I’m buying has had the home inspection done and the seller has agreed to make necessary repairs. Repairs are currently underway, but I found out at town hall that no permits have recently been pulled. A new outside deck had been added to the house, kitchen remodeling has been done w/o walls being changed and new flooring is now being installed. Floor joists are being reinforced and temporary 2 X 4 supports are being replaced with permanent columns in the basement. My realtor/agent had not put in the repair agreement that permits be pulled from city hall and inspections performed. I hadn’t known any better till now. Is there anything I can do now to protect myself now that I’m already in the process of buying the home. I’ve thought of calling city hall myself to report this. but I know this could really cause trouble. What do you suggest.
I was thinking of anonymously calling city hall. I don’t know what to do. please help.

Product to cover a kitchen cabinet door.

By on November 22nd, 2009

I recently saw a product on a DIY TV program which was a roll of coloured sticky back plastic which you peel off and use to cover kitchen cabinet doors with, instead of painting them. Does anyone know what this product is called. I can’t seem to find it anywhere.

How do you go about laying a new floor (Basic Questions).

By on November 21st, 2009

My kitchen needs a new floor. It had square tiles that are now starting to come up, it’s 20 years old. I ideally want some a kinda wood tiles / laminated finish. Similar to: http://www.woodfloorpolish.com/New%20Folder/New%20Bruce%20floor.jpg (but with probably a darker colour)
I can’t tell exactly what surface is under the tiles. I think it’s some kind of concrete. How difficult would it be for an amateur to lay it. I have basic DIY skills/tools.

Can anybody estimate what it is per sqaure foor / meter for DIY.
Can anybody estimate what it is per sqaure foor / meter if I got someone else to install it.
