How to remove cook top & oven for cleaning.

By on September 10th, 2009

I am closing on my new home tomorrow. I am replacing all the appliances. The place is dirty as all hell. I am going to pay cleaners to go through and clean the whole place. I thought it might be nice to remove the oven, microwave and cook top since all are being replace and nasty food, grease, etc. is all around them. I am also having the cabinets stripped and repainted, it will be nice to have that done without the appliances in there.

So I am not near the house, its about 45 miles from me, I’d love to know how I can basically remove these items and put them outside to be thrown away. I want to go in after I close and do this. I am handy, just not HOME handy yet. I’ve worked on many cars, motorcycles, ATV, etc. I’ve done lots of wood working, built AK and AR rifles, so I am no idiot, just havent ever owned a house.

So, the cook top of gas. The microwave is a hood/microwave above the cook top. The oven is under the cook top and is electric.

I assume kill the breakers for the house (I dont need electricity, the house is empty). Then somehow turn off the main gas line to the house (do I need some tool from home depot).

I was able to lift the cook top out (it was heavy) and I am not certain how it connected via gas.
How does an oven come out.
How does the microwave come out. Is it screwed in from above the cabinets on top maybe. I havent looked, I know there is a duct in those 2 cabinets above.

Top of the stove (cook top) lifting straight up seems correct as I lifted it mostly out to take measurements (of the cut out) when I was there. How about the gas connection. Is that standard. Something that if I turn the gas off I can disconnect with a crescent wrench or some standard tool (I have most wrenches, sockets, pliers, etc. that standard dudes have).

The microwave seems pretty easy as it is is screwed in above. (as you stated)

The oven though, where is it typically screwed in. Is it accessible to me from the front. I’ll find out when I am there I suppose.

Where can I find the necessary permits and licenses for small baking business.

By on September 9th, 2009

I live in Vallejo, CA and look forward to opening a bakery in the future. I want to start out small and was going to start baking in my home but have read that is not advisable due to zoning, the need for licenses, permits.etc.

I think I will have to bake in a commercial kitchen and have some ideas on where to go for that. I need help in figuring out where and how to store ingredients in that situation. And also where to find the necessary forms to make this legal. I searched online all Sunday and came up empty. Can anyone help point me in the right direction and help me find out what is necessary in my area.

Thanks in advance.

Furniture Used On Desperate Housewives In Seasons 1-4.

By on September 8th, 2009

Gabrielle Solis in seasons one to four had a beautiful glass top kitchen table with a roman looking pedestal. Then after the five year jump she had replaced it with a wooden one. The reason I ask is because I loved the one from the first four seasons and wanted one just like it for my home. Does anyone know where I could get that particular table.Or find one similar.

How to get rid of old house odors.

By on September 7th, 2009

Me and my family just moved into a 3000 square foot 1960’s home. It smells horribly of old home and smoke. we already remodeled the kitchen, and got dehumidifiers for the basement. The people who lived here before refinished the wood floors 5 years ago and the walls were all painted white. we have had our A/C fixed, but we haven’t cleaned the ducts yet. any suggestions on how to get rid of this god awful smell.

PLEASE help me with this dream. :(.

By on September 5th, 2009

ok i have always had weird dreams, but not like the one i had last night. first off, a long time ago i had this dream where i was in a bus with a bunch of people and the bus driver was trying to kill us or something cause she had like the worst driving. So anyways, last night my dream pretty much started off where we were in a bus with the same bus driver, and i knew something bad was going to happen, so i was like telling everyone I HAVE HAD THIS DREAM BEFORE I KNOW WHATS GOING TO HAPPEN. WE HAVE TO PULL OVER SHESS GOING TO HURT US, but no one would listen. and i was getting so mad at the driver cause she was putting us in harm.so then i was like WHAT IS YOUR NAME to her, because i wanted to like take her to the cops or whatever, and she said what my name was. :| so i was like uhhh okkk. and then all of a sudden , i was at my cottage. and under my cottage there is a crawl space. and all the kids that were in the bus were under there, and they were possessed and being tortured by some random guy i didnt know. he was about 40, tall, dark hair. and he was possessing and torturing everyone. so all of a sudden , my dad walks out of the crawl space, and i was like “DAD ,WHERE IS IAN” my older brother, and he was possessed too by that guy, so he said to me “he is under there digging up bugs”. so i was freeking out. and then i went inside to where my grandma and grandpa were. they were in the kitchen, they were both posessed too. but i didnt know that at the time, and then my grandpa came up to me (who i am very close to and love alot) and he said “katie. go let the guy cut 3 of your fingers off. thats all he wants. i got it done too.see. and it’s not that bad” so then i realized he was possessed. and i was like NO , im not going to get that done. and so my grandpa was trying to get the guy who was torturing everyone’s attention, and he was trying to stab me, So i had to stab my grandpa in order to save myself. i waslike “grandpa ,i love you soo much but i have to do this” so i stabbed him in the throat with an ice pic. and then all of a sudden i was outside again on the deck, and the guy who was organizing all this & killing people came running down at me, and i knew i couldnt run away, so right when he was about to stab me, so i stabbed him at the same time, but RIGHT before that was about to happen , i saw myself. and i was in a different place , and i was repeating , “i will never look at the bad things again, i will never take things for grantid, just wake up, wake up” and then i woke up. and i didnt know what to do at first, i walked out of my room and my mom saw me and she was like “omg whats wrong” so i pretty much broke down crying and could barely talk i was so upset about it.

sorry if that was long, but thats what my dream was about.
i know the last part about me telling myself all that stuff means i need to change my attitude towards different things. but all the other stuff.i have NO idea what it means.
could you pleease give me ideas as to what all the different elements of this dream could mean.
thanks so much .

Which piping to get for LPG copper or plastic.

By on September 4th, 2009

Hi I am getting my kitchen remodeled and want to put my LPG cylinder in my balcony to make the house more safer. I have been recommended to get a copper piping or option of plastic piping. The copper piping will be done by a professional and plastic can be done by my carpenter. Cost is not the issue but I want to understand which is better option and safest. Not sure. please advice.

Can a mouse problem allow me to break my lease.

By on September 3rd, 2009

We signed a lease April 2009 to go through April 2010. We found out a few months into living here that we a mouse problem. It is a small house and they are everywhere. They created a burrow in our bed side table that they were dragging my dogs food into. They ruined all of the food in our pantry and I wake up every morning to mouse droppings all over my kitchen. I don’t cook in my any more because I feel it is unsanitary. I have a saved text message from my landlord that said that he was aware of the problem before we moved in and has unsuccessfully tried two terminators in the part.
Also, our dishwasher was broken and it took him three weeks to fix it. The mice chewed a hole through a tube to the dishwasher which in turn cause mold to grow underneath of kitchen sink.
The lot next door (ten feet from our bedroom window) just started to build a house which has increased the mouse activity in our house.
Do we have grounds for terminating out lease.

I need a lock for my home office.

By on September 2nd, 2009

I have a home office and its my sanctuary. I spend alot of time reading in there, I have very important information kept there and alot of expensive things. Currently my dear sister in law(hmmph) is staying with us while she gets back on her feet. Last week I noticed my drawers were shuffled around and my fountain pen(which was a gift) was missing. Today I came home a few hours early from going to see my sister and I find her smoking in my office, trying to get into my personal computer(instead of using the one in the kitchen which is never locked), she had a half eaten burger and all of its mess all over my desk(which I inherited from my grandmother.). I nearly tore her head off. She and I have never really clicked but I’ve always tried to be civil and respect her, but this is too far. She roams the house and makes a mess everywhere and if she weren’t my husbands sister, I would have her ass on the street. I am in dyer need of putting a very good lock on that door and I’d prefer to do it myself. I want something that I can have a key for on the outside and just a normal turn lock on the inside. Boundaries need to be set and my husband is too soft on his baby sister. I guess this is the only way.

If you can suggest a lock and tell me what tools I would need to do it, that would be great.

Thanks for listening to my rant, I know that was useless information but it made me feel a little better. :0)

Landlord trouble, need help.

By on September 1st, 2009

I live in Massachusetts. We have very specific laws regarding tenant’s rights.
I’ve lived in the house for 7 years and the landlord has always been reluctant to do repairs.
We’re having problems now with getting work fixed. We called the board of health in to do an inspection, but they didn’t do it very well.
The state sanitary code is specific, and they neglected to mention problems. First we have mice in the kitchen cabinets and we can’t use them. I showed them the entry points into the house, they said it is our responsibility to take care of the mice, I told her the code says it is his responsibility to take care of them because he has neglected to keep them out of the house. I showed her the gaps in the basement door where they come in, as well as basement windows, and the holes in the cabinets. The 2″ drain pipes has a 6″x12″ square opening cut out of the cabinet as well as two inch gapes leading into the attic. Yet she negated to mention it on the report.
The bathroom has a bad light fixture, a result of a leak in the roof that was repaired, but the light wasn’t replaced, it wasn’t on the report. The floor in the bathroom is rotten, the vanity in the bathroom is rotten, both were mentioned in the report, but they didn’t mention the cause, a leaking toilet, nor the mold present on the walls, and the code says that the walls have to be mold resistant for four feet from the floor, yet it is covered in mold.
Then we had a six foot slider leading onto a deck, the slider fell into the house, the landlord replaced it without a permit, he framed in a regular door, used old uneven boards as sheathing, put a tarp over the door opening and left it. After two weeks I installed the door, put duct tape over the gaps in the sheathing, put some insulation in and put up a piece of Sheetrock. There is a trap door in the deck right outside where the slider was and it is falling in, the reason for it falling in, and the reason for the slider falling into the house is a rotten sill, I showed it to the inspector, they mentioned that the side of the house needed to be sided, and the trap door needed repair, but not the sill.
I made a point of mentioning the kitchen floor, the code says it has to be sealed, and if it is wood, which it is, it must be sealed and free from cracks, ours has no finish, is turning gray from water absorption, and the cracks between the boards are obvious and filled with debris from sweeping, yet she brushed it off, mentioning her floor is like that.
She mentioned the gaps in the kitchen windows that we have taped up to keep the bugs out, but didn’t put it in the report, there are no screen doors on any of the outside doors, except one which fell off four months ago and is sitting on the deck, yet made no mention of them.
The repairs he’s done have been substandard, I told them he replaced the water heater without a permit, and a few days later it leaked propane into the house. She saw the door opening and I told her how he left it, she saw the stained ceilings, bad light fixtures, etc. She did make him put in smoke and carbon detectors, since it turns out the ones we had were hollow.
What really bugs me is I have a four year old. The hot water tank really bugs me, he’s a licensed plumber, he knows the laws, and he put us at risk to save a $50 permit fee.

Now had we died, he would be charged with negligent homicide, what I want to know is recourse.

How do I go about getting the house fixed up to code, since he’s a licensed plumber, born and raised in this town, and owns half a dozen properties in the town, and he knows everyone in town hall.

Second, can I push to have criminal charges brought against him for putting us at risk to save $50.

Third, once we reported him to the board of health he served us with a notice to quit, basically saying he wants us out of the house, which is illegal, it is retaliation, and we have never missed a rent payment. So what do I do about that. The attorney general’s office said it was illegal to do, and just to ignore it, that if he tries to evict, it will be dismissed, but that would still be missed work, not to mention the stress we’re dealing with now.

I don’t see the point to having the laws on the books if no one will do anything about blatant violations.
