I’d rip out your counter top and do a darker color, like a dark marble or granite then sand the cabinets and paint them white-it brightens up a kitchen.

Sometimes you can strip and re-stain older cabinets. You do it just like you do a piece of furniture. But it is a big, messy job to do this. so big and so messy that it is rarely done. Painting is always a good choice. but if you really do want to stay with a wood finish, go to a place that sells cabinets and talk to them about refacing the cabinets. it will be a loot more expensive than refinishing them, but a lot less expensive than replacing them. Plus you can get and color of finish that you want and they will look like brand new cabinets.
