Small black insects, twice as big as fruit flies and sort of like flies, have invaded our house. It started near the guinea pig cage, then quickly spread to the kitchen and pantry. We have tried using apple vinegar, but it’s only effective in killing a few fruit flies. Is there a better way to get rid of these things.

Depends exactly what type of fly it is. He’s a list with solutions.

One they don’t list is fungus fly, they breed in your plant pots in the moist upper soil. For those let the top layer of soil dry out completely and water from the bottom, or stick a funnel into it. Try keeping the top layer dry. No newborns will come out and the adults die in a week or two. But these are similar size to fruit flies which sound smaller than the ones you have.
Good luck.

they’re not invading, they’re breeding in something, and the guinea pig cage is the clue you gave.in warm weather flies only live a few weeks, lay eggs in some kind of waste or produce, hatch into maggots which turn into flies.when you find the place they are breeding, your problem is solved.& i suggest you start with a check thru the guinea pig litter, or any open bags of food you have around there.
