How far does a stove range need to be from a refrigerator.

I am redesigning my kitchen and the only place I can think of putting the stove is next to the refrigerator. It would be seperated by a slab of plywood finished off with molding.approx 3 inches. Is this too close.

    5 meters at least.
    That is my opinion only.

It depends on your appliances, some are just a few inches. But your best bet is to look in your owners manuals, both have a section on clearances. If you don’t have your manuals, you can download them from the mfg. web sites.

In my high school drafting class my teacher suggested keeping the refrigreator at least 12 inches from a range, and preferably having a base cabinet separate the two. Having the two as close as you suggest would be inefficient for the refrigerator, plus if you pull something out of the fridge you may not want to set it on a hot stovetop. Not a topic we covered in college.

I found a website that gives some design guidelines, including the infamous design triangle, which I was taught should be 12-22 feet. The first link states 23-26 feet - I think kitchens have gotten bigger since I was in school.

From a functional standpoint the website states at least 12 inches on one side and 15-24 on the other. I think one side is sufficient.

If you feel you might want professional advise I am an architect and would be happy to review your situation. If you go to my web site I have pictures of my personal kitchen under “Residential Projects.”

You should have at leat a 12″ base cabinet between the fridge and the stove because of the heat and splatters from cooking.
