Do you have an easy, inexpensive way to restore kitchen cabinets.

I don’t understand why Americans are going nuts for their kitchens. Particularly, the cabinets and counter tops. When I started getting estimates on fixing mine up, they all seemed outrageously hight. I am sitting around doing nothing most of the time, can do some DIY projects when I take lots of time and am careful, but am not a skilled craftsman. So, my question is, what is the best way for me to take on making the cabinets look better. To me, they are too dark, have water damage to outsides, need real nice outer hardware and anythign else to make them look nice.
I guess I have to strip the who bunch. Some sides are only photographic film, or so I am told, over crummy plywood. Maybe the whole thing is plywood or worse. One thing for sure, is there are many linerar feet of cabinets and there are lots of drawers, cabinets, shelves and all.
Gosh, I woul dlike to save those $23,000 quoted so far.
Any ideas.
Bye for now

Why don’t you find a good old carpenter in the neighborhood and give him a test.he would probably cut you out a set for 5 grand, or teach you how to skin them and put new door and drawer faces on. You can buy prefinished skin and prefinished door and drawer stock. Good luck.

23K sounds a bit high, but the fact is that improvements to the kitchen and bathroom do more for home equity than any other area. There are many things you can do that are not that expensive.

Wash them down with some TSP. Take the doors and all hardware off. Prime with Kilz-it water based primer using small foam roller and foam brush. Let dry and paint with enamel paint. You could paint the cabinets one color and the doors and drawers another color.
