Plumbing question: Is there anything I could really screw up repairing my own kitchen pipe.

By on September 21st, 2008

The pipe below my kitchen cabinet, the part that curves down and then up, has a hole in it. Someone gave me a metal “snake” and I was using it and it just punched a hole in the pipe. I have the tools to remove that section.

Is there anything that I could severely damage if I removed that piece of pipe, took it to Home Depot, got a replacement for it, and reinstalled it.

Thanks in advance. I don’t want to remove anything if there’s a chance I’ll have to have major plumbing work done if I do the wrong thing.

unless the plumbing is very very old like 30 or 40 years i would leave it be or if it was done improperly you will be ok , you may just get a bit aggravated but you seem more than competent enough to change the P-trap . PS don’t buy some cheap plastic trap for 3 dollars as it won’t even hold up to hot pasta water . get a good quality 17 gauge brass trap and do the job right .

You can probably give it a go w/o doing any major damage. Get plastic replacement parts - they’re easier to work with (and will last longer than brass).

Note that if the p-trap had rotted, there may be other rotted tubular parts under there.

No your fine. Your talking about the P trap. This keeps odor from coming out of your septic into your sink area. The trap holds water all the time blocking odor. It just unscrews in two places. It will be full of water when you take it off unless the hole you punched in it drained it out. Just put the new one on using the little washers supplied with it and snug it down. Dont tighten it too much.

you can replace it very easily but if you still have a clogg i would leave the p trap off which is the curvy pipe and snake the pipe. then once you do that you can put the p trap back on and run plenty of water through it to replace the trap seal

Good Job you did exactly the right thing. Just be care full and don’t over tighten unless u have leaks after first tightening snugly. Again GOOD JOB
