Open plan living. How to maximise sense of space.

By on September 18th, 2008

In an open plan appartment, the kitchen units are made of light beech. The worksurfaces are black. All walls painted white at the moment. To maximise the sense of space, is it best to choose living room furniture made of the same wood as the kitchen units. The appartment is on the small side, but has large bay windows overlooking the ocean. I would like the appartment to appear large, airy and modern.

some times the addition of full length mirrors gives a sense of depth and yes i’d keep the furniture color the same

You’re on the right track. When you match the wood, you’ll have a sense of continuity, making the area look like one instead of two rooms. Also make sure that the furniture isn’t too big. soft and comfy overstuffed will only make the apt. look overstuffed. Clean, sleek lines and appropriately sized will give the room a clean, airy look. Sounds like you’re planning to paint as well, so you’ll want to go with light colors rather than dark. You can also use accessory pillows, artwork, etc. in bold colors through the apt. to give it some pop, and again, continuity. Most of all, ENJOY the restful sounds and sights of the ocean.
