What a great idea. I would suggest a ladle (such as you would use for an 8 qt. pot). I use mine all the time and I’m not even a chef (making stock, soup, etc.). The sole reason I don’t recommend a knife is because chef’s are kindof funny about their knives, but a Henkle one would be great, though expensive.

How about a rolling pin. That would be perfect, she could display it and use it too.

I agree with the above poster, a great chef’s knife is perfect to get engraved. Make it a really nice brand of knife, too, like Wusthof or Shun. Check http://www.williamsonoma.com.

A good quality knife to a chef is like religion to a priest. It is their everything. Sure gadgets come and go, but at the end of the day, it is a trusty knife they will put their faith in to everytime they use it.
