I don’t really know why but that’s how the game is. They don’t let you see their dorm rooms. It’s kind of weird that they don’t.

The game is like that on purpose to keep your game from lagging. The more objects on the lot the more resources the game will need from your computer.
I’m not sure if there’s a option to change it to see the rooms contents. While in game I would look under Options, then Game options.

If you go into there room if its not locked you can see their furniture. Its not a problem, helps to see which room is yours so random people aren’t invading your space.

it’s not a problem. that’s just how the game is. i’m not sure what it’s like that, but it’s either to not lag up your comp if your graphics card can’t handle it.or it’s the idea of privacy. i don’t remember if in Bon Voyage when you go to a hotel it’s the same thing.but the idea is probably that you’re living in a dorm, sharing semi-public place with other people. you’re controlling one (or however many sims) only, therefore you can only see what’s yours, and not other people’s stuff. does that make any sense. when other sims goes back to their room it’s their private time, it’s like you going back to your room and no one down the hall can see you anymore. that’s the concept that i thought of when i first played university. maybe i’m thinking of this in a realistic way.but is that the whole thing with the sims 2. to make as real as possible since i’t s based on us in real life.

does that make any sense. i’m sure you’re not gonnna get a definitely answer unless someone from maxis actually answer that question before.
