Who needs a formal dining room. How many dinners will you host there per year. I redesigned and added space to the kitchen & laundry room. Those rooms we use daily. Buying furniture for rooms you rarely use is a total waste of money

Depends on if you have to walk through the formal dining room to get to the rest of the house. That would be bad traffic flow design. Otherwise it should be fine.

It’s not my favorite feature, to be walking right into a dining room upon entering a house. Far better to come upon the living room first, but if you can’t change the floor plan, could you possibly frame your dining room in any way, with a half-wall perhaps, flanked by columns of some sort. That’s what I’d do.
