I am updating my kitchen, including painting the walls, stripping and painting my cabinets, and replacing the linoleum floor. My countertops are in perfect shape, but the design on them is extremely outdated. Is there a special paint or shelac or something like that I can use to change their appearance.

It depends on what they are made out of. If they are solid wood tops, then sand them down and stain or paint. If they are just that laminated plasterboard stuff which is 9/10 of countertops, you may have to replace them all together. Check at Lowe’s or Home Depot to be sure.
Sounds like you are going to have an awesome kitchen when you are done. Take pictures now and when you are finished to show us all.

You can buy sheet laminate in a different pattern which is flexible enough to mould around curved edges. This can be glued onto kitched worktops to give a new surface and appearance.

It is called Melmine paint ( make sure you get akyd base) degrease, lightly sand, and aply with 4″ foam roller. Two thin coats are better than one . If you can loosen sink and paint under edgeit is better Mine stood up for 3 year no problem to give fresh coat .Unless very large kitchen 1/4 will do

i wouldn’t recommend painting a countertop , new laminate , or pickup a new or used complete countertop , will look so much better , paint will always fail , due to moisture , foods , utensils will damage paints.

I’ve attempted this myself and resurfaced all the tops — please trust me it is soooo worth it to by a new top at the home depot. They have awesome designs and the work is sooo much more easier.

what are your countertops made of. if they are laminate, they can be painted but there are several steps to take to get them to look good.

There is a product called Skim Stone, from Modern Masters, which is applied over laminate. or any other surface, and sealed. The finished result looks like slate or polished concrete and is beautiful. I saw it done on Carter Can on HGTV.
