How do you crack a coconut open on a deserted island.

By on March 24th, 2008

I know how to do it in my kitchen. but, say you got shipwrecked on a tropical island and you have no tools at your disposal, you’re starving to death, and all that’s around is coconut trees. How do you crack a coconut open with just what’s available without spilling the milk. Is there any survival technique.

Also, how do island dwellers open their coconuts. Do they use specific tools, or do they just use what’s available.

There are 3 circles on one end that look like 2 eyes and a mouth. You smash the coconut “between the eyes” and it breaks open easily. That’s its weak spot.

Try it when you next have a coconut.

Make a basic knife out if rock to get it started, then use a somewhat long and thin, but sturdy piece of wood lying around to pry the rest open. I think I’ve seen it done like that

It is NOT easy. You have to remove the husk first. It is in three basic sections. The outer part must be cut or broken through from the narrow end until at least halfway down. All the way down is better but not always necessary. After this is accomplished (a sharp rock would probably be your best bet on a desert island - unless you happen to have a machete with you) you peel off the three sections of husk and you have the coconut you see at grocery stores sometimes. There are three eyes in the end. One or two (I forget) are soft (not covered by the hard shell). You need to pierce one of these to drink the milk inside. Then just smack the hard shell up against a flat rock (you might have to do this a few times). It will break “fairly” easily and you can get to the coconut meat. I have always found the milk to be best in a barely ripe (still has a lot of green in the husk) coconut. The meat is better in a slightly more mature one.”Island dwellers” would use a machete - same technique as above but very easy with the right tool and experience.

i had a survival guide from the army and ill try to recall what it said.

1.Get a large tree branch or stick and sharpen it to a point on one end.

    2. place the non pointed end pretty deep in the ground (i guess you can make another point this would probablly help)

    3. you need to remove the husk first the coconut will look like a hug pistachio at this point so insert the pointed stick in between the to grooves of the husk and beat it with a rock.

    4. do the same with the coconut on the eyes using a rock. and then open it with your hands or you can just throw it.
