A kitchen color disaster.

I just purchased my first home with stainless steel appliances w/i the kitchen w/ dark granite floors and yellowish/tan cabinets. I was wondering cld any1 suggest a color paint for the walls. I wld like to go for a more modern look.Thnx.

With this much color already in place, I suggest semi-gloss WHITE. Don’t create conflict, you don’t want the colors fighting for dominance. I know the TV shows would choose some wild color. Those make me sick. You didn’t say what color the floor is. White walls and ceiling will work.

I’d be inclined to paint the cabinets, perhaps a dark grey, then use a light pearl grey on the walls. Install rolled steel or alimiunum (sp) tile backsplash. If the tops of the counters will accomodate it, you could turn them into a faux marble look like the floor to tie the whole thing together. Get a good ‘faux painting’ book. One of my friends did an entire faux marble WALL and it was magnificient, much greater than you would think. While ‘classic’ look, what i’ve suggested gives a modern design appearance, particular with your stainless steel cabinets and the proposed backsplash. You might also want to put an island in the middle (if there is room) in the same color scheme, with a wrought iron pot-hanger hanging over the island.

I would go with an off-white color. white would be too harsh. cream or eggshell perhaps. I agree with too much color not being good in a kitchen. What I would do to jazz it up then would be to add a very modern beautiful border all the way around, either waist level or ceiling level, that is colorful. I would choose something with deep color in it. like burgandy and olive green or something. You didn’t say what color the granite is. perhaps choose a color from that to stand out in the border, or at least a darker shade of one color if it is very light.

You should play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the “painted” rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. Blue is the trendy color for kitchens at the moment, so I suggest something like the color called “distance.”

I would suggest using a warm color tone: reds, browns, pumpkin - particularly if there is a red undertone to the floor.

If it is more black - you can do a cooler color like blues and greens.
