spitting is common in many places, not just India. It’s just a cultural thing.
Don’t forget, the English were horrified when they went to Japan in the 1800s and discovered that everyone there was bathing EVERY DAY. outrageous, those Japanese. ;p

There’s a book called _The Rituals of Dinner_ that mentions that. Most people in Western countries have managed to control spitting to the extent that they aren’t conscious of the impulse anymore. (Some haven’t, but they look like classless louts.) It really is just a matter of different etiquette, and trying not to give offense.
