Atheists: What volunteer work do you do and where do you donate.

I’ll start. I donate money to the soup kitchen in the town I used to live in every 6 months or so. (I used to volunteer there, but obviously since I moved I don’t anymore.) I also donate food to a local charity food pantry every time I go to the grocery store. I volunteer for Habitat For Humanity every few months. And I volunteer with Turtle Watch when I can.
Turtle Watch is a program that tracks turtle nesting data and tries to increase the number of hatchlings that make it safely to adulthood by educating people in costal areas about their habits and needs.

I donate to a local kids lunch program.
I was unlucky enough to be a poor hungry child, trying to mitigate those who endure the same.
Also, every December when my work hands out bonuses, I give $100 of it to the local food bank.
Easy come, easy go.

Atheists volunteer, and do charity work all over the world.
We just don’t feel the need to ”toot” our own horn.

I volunteer at a Victim’s Crisis center. I take calls twice a month to assist victims of violence and abuse. I am a member of Amnesty International where I contribute financially regularly. I am also a member of my local chapter of NORML. And I volunteer for children’s court where kids who have to testify come into the court room before a trial. They check out the place so they aren’t so scared and intimidated once the trial begins.
Edit: To pip, I don’t think anyone is tooting their horns on here. I think this is an excellent question that some Christians or anti - atheist types will look at and see we are all good people too.

I volunteer with animal husbandry at the local aquarium, and also with teaching marine biology there for students. I participate in annual river and beach clean-ups when it’s warmer. I am a homework mentor at the local elementary schools, and I read books aloud to record them for people who are blind and don’t know braille. In the past, I’ve volunteered in an emergency veterinary hospital, and collected water samples and testing them for the local department of environmental protection.

My career is actually non-profits, so that’s what I do full time for pay, as well.
Oh, and I buy Girl Scout Cookies every year and FFA fruit. I’m a sucker.

I donate blood and platelets on a regular basis to the Red Cross. I dont have garage sales because I feel guilty about making money off my old junk, so I just donate all my semi-valuables to the Goodwill. I last two years I helped give out free Turkeys to the less privileged here in beautiful Los Angeles. Of course I always donate canned goods to various locations when I can (usually around Christmas/Thanksgiving time they have the bins out at supermarkets and my son’s school and such). I do a 5k for breast cancer and one for Autism every year, although I dont really consider that volunteer work it is a nice gesture. I also helped clean a beach a couple times, but I decided that my volunteering efforts were probably more needed elsewhere.
I always wanted to help Habitat for Humanity. You’ve inspired me, i’m going to their website now.

Pin -Survivor of the Clone Wars says:
I volunteer for a few months every year at a local school, in a program called Kid Art, helping the students make a class effort art project that is later auctioned off to raise funds for the school - it is a charter school that gets only a little state funding.
I volunteer at a museum.
I donate pieces of my work to local fundraisers for various god reasons.
I’m currently donating to a fund for a local large family in which the mother died, and the debtors are telling her eldest children that they are fully responsible for all of her debts. I’m hoping they can get a lawyer to help them not start their adult lives deeply in debt.
I donate all my cans to the fire department who recycles them and uses the funds locally.
I donate all of our good clothing, household stuff, etc to goodwll or salvation army - when we moved, I took 5 vanloads - and I do mean vanloads - over to them. When spouse’s mom died, we donated a lot of her stuff, espcially all of her clothing- there is a place near where she lived that took in women’s professional clothing to donate ot women who need it to get out of menial jobs. That was 4 carloads - that woman had lots of clothes.
I didn’t even consider buying GS cookies as donating - I just do it regularly, and for a selfish reason - I like the cookies. I actually bought less this year, since we moved - I worked next store to the GS counsil office and I’d go in there and buy a box full.
I donate otherwise what I can, where I can.

I am on the board of directors for the volunteer steward group of a local natural area, and also used to run the bug and spider group for a local natural history club. I’m still involved with them, and lead tour groups and give talks to school groups, etc. on nature, the environment, bugs, and stuff like that.
Through my work, I am also very involved in STOPDED (the Society to Prevent Dutch Elm Disease), and through them a lot of affiliated groups (such as the Heritage Trees Project).
I have also done volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity, the MS Society, and the Folk Music Festival Society.
In the past I did a lot of work with the Provincial Museum (now the Royal Alberta Museum), working on cleaning and categorizing the faunal collections in the Archaeology section, and helping to pin and sort collected insects in the Entomology section, but now I just help out at their annual Bug Fair, and provide live specimens for their aquatic insect habitat.
I donate money to all of these groups, and also to the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, Alberta Wildlife Association, Federation of Alberta Naturalists, and Change for Children (which works to help street kids in developing nations).

Fez says:
My wife and I regularly donate stuff we don’t use to Goodwill and the Salvation Army.
We’ve taken in three ferrets from rescue shelters and donated a good amount of money to a local one. I don’t know if that counts as volunteer work, but I think it’s in the spirit of the question. Our local shelter is overwhelmed and needs lots of good adoptees and funds for food, litter, bedding, and veterinary services.
I regularly donate money to the ASPCA, the International Campaign for Tibet, and the U.S. Campaign for Burma. I’m also a member of Co-Op America.
